Motivational Fit: What is Push/Pull?

Every job interview has four major areas of assessment. One of those is traditionally called Motivational Fit. One concept within Motivational Fit is something I call Push/Pull.  The hiring manager needs to understand what is pushing you from your current or former employer and pulling you toward this new job opportunity.

When focusing on “pull,” the hiring manager will evaluate whether you’ve done adequate research. You need to be able to articulate what is attractive to you about the company and the opportunity.

When describing the “push” aspect, you don’t want to do so in a way that maligns your current or former employer. Remember that when a candidate speaks negatively about their current or former employer, it ends up projecting negatively onto the candidate instead.

Spend some time thinking about how you will artfully describe your motivation to make a job change. As you describe that pain, you want to do so in a way that presents the new job opportunity as a reasonable remedy.

I hope this information is insightful for when you describe your Motivational Fit.
